The Swamps of Sleethe includes the simple rhyme schemes and language
that Prelutsky usually employs. In this case, the reader might be a bit older,
third and fourth grade, but younger readers would enjoy being read the text and
shown the illustrations. This book seems to show some of Prelutsky’s growth as
an author, in that it includes word scrambles and more imaginative text than
his previous works. The various verses imagine a series of different planets
and the experiences one might expect there. This book definitely reveals more
imagination, and a sense of fun that goes beyond the merely silly to the
somewhat extraordinary. The word scrambles are fairly simplistic, and should
provide a good opportunity for readers to feel positive about reading
accomplishments.
